Logistics

ARCH Cold Chain Solutions East Africa Fund is building a Cold Chain network across East Africa. Our temperature-controlled warehouse and logistics services will provide a one-stop shop for cold chain solutions incorporating temperature-controlled storage ranging from ambient to chilled to frozen (20° C to -40° C) temperatures, blast freezing, and food processing. We will develop a total installed estimated capacity of over 100,000 pallets across East Africa to serve the production and distribution needs of local, regional, national, and international clients offering a full complement of temperature-controlled warehousing and logistics services.

The facilities will cater to five core industries or sectors for the provision of cold chain solutions namely: fresh fruit and vegetables; pharmaceuticals; poultry, meat and seafood; supermarkets and quick-service restaurants; and food manufacturing across East Africa. Each facility will be constructed to grade A standards and will bring globally recognized accreditation to this developing industry across East Africa. We consider environmental sustainability with the utmost importance and concern. Each facility will be installed with off-grid renewable power production and implement the best-in-class energy-efficient cooling systems available, seeking to minimize the impact on the environment and climate change. Each facility will be designed and developed to attain gold certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the most widely used green building rating system in the world.
The logistics strategy aims to be an enabler of economic growth and development in East Africa while also having a positive impact on lowering GHGs, providing food security and greater access to pharmaceuticals, and improving livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

The Fund’s target countries include Kenya (Nairobi: Tatu City SEZ and Mombasa: Colfax Industrial Park), Rwanda (Kigali – Kigali Prime Economic Zone), Uganda, Tanzania (Dar es Eslam), Ethiopia (Addis Ababa – Kilinto Industrial Park), and one other East African country. Our first facility is based in Nairobi, where the facility entails the construction of a 17,100 Gross Building Area (GBA) square meter / 15,000 pallet positions state-of-the-art temperature-controlled facility on a 6-acre greenfield site within the Tatu City Special Economic Zone in Kiambu County, Nairobi. The Nairobi facility will be ARCH Cold Chain Solutions East Africa Fund’s flagship site for Kenya and East Africa, providing an aggregation hub for wider distribution for some key sectors e.g., Pharmaceuticals and regional clients. The facility plans to be operational by January 2023 with the full rollout of facilities in all countries envisaged to be undertaken within two to three years.
